Do you read everything you should read in a working day? Chances are you don’t, there’s just not enough time.
Develop speed reading skills, they’re essential
To become more productive, aim to read faster. While there are dozens of books on the subject of speed reading, there are only a couple of points you need to be aware of to read at five and ten times the speed at which you read now.
Here they are:
* Keep your eyes moving down the page
Just keep your eyes moving. When your eyes are moving down the page, you’ll take in entire sentences, then paragraphs, at one time. Normally you focus on a word, then a sentence, and this is a slow way of reading. You have to train yourself to keep your eyes moving.
Expect to feel frustrated, but persist. Eventually sliding your eyes down the page, while comprehending what you’ve read, will become your new habit.
* Don’t sub-vocalize
When you learn to read, you sub-vocalize. That is, you say each word and sentence to yourself. Aim to break yourself of this habit. It takes time, but once you’re conscious of it, you can gradually eliminate it, as you focus on moving your eyes down the page, and reading faster. Before you know it, you’ll have broken yourself of the habit of sub-vocalizing.
Practice speed reading for ten minutes a day - that’s all it takes
Set aside ten minutes early in the day (when you’re more alert) to practice speed reading. Those ten focused minutes will teach you new habits, and before you know it, you’ll be zooming through all the reading you have to do.
